Darren W. Hayes30 Nov 1961 ~ 19 Jan 2005From the January 24, 2005 edition of the Marshall Chronicle:Police believe a combination of speed, wet road conditions and possibly alcohol may have contributed to a single car crash Wednesday that claimed the life of a 43-year-old Marshall man in Marengo Township, according to the Calhoun County Sheriff's Office. Darren Hayes reportedly died instantly of multiple injuries at about 12:10pm when he was thrown from his vehicle as it rotated clockwise on eastbound Partello Road just east of 20 Mile Road, left the roadway and struck a telephone pole, said accident investigator Steve Hinkley of the Calhoun County Sheriff's Office. It appears snow and ice had already melted from the salt placed on the roadway by the county road commission," said Hinkley, "so it was not really icy but it was sort of slippery from just being wet." A witness account of the accident coincided with Hinkley's conclusion that Hayes had likely been driving too fast for conditions. "It appears the driver entered the curve at a rate of speed that was too fast for conditions and he couldn't maintain the car," said Hinkley. "The roads were wet and he should have slowed down. As he entered the curve, the rear of the car began to slide, he lost control and struck a utility pole. As the car was rotating, he was ejected." Hayes and his vehicle came to rest in the yard of a Partello Road home. "We are suspecting that alcohol may have been a factor." he said, adding that Hayes apparently was unrestrained at the time of the crash. According to Polo Club Apartments manager Dana Pourchez, Hayes was "a loner," and lived alone in the complex. "He loved music and would play the guitar and stuff," she said, adding that she talked to him "not a whole lot. He kept to himself." Hayes is reportedly survived by his mother, two sisters, and a young son. A brother, said Pourchez, died about two years ago when his motorcycle struck a deer. Services are being arranged by Kempf Funeral Home in Marshall. =============================================================== I visited Marshall in December 2004 and spent some time with Darren and took this picture of him on December 30, 2004 - three weeks before he died. It was the last photo ever taken of him. From the January 31 2005 edition of the Marshall Chronicle:Darren Wayne Hayes, age 43, of Marshall died Wednesday, January 19, 2005 from injuries he received in an automobile accident. Darren was born on November 30, 1961 in Detroit to Douglas Wayne and Dolores (Koryla) Hayes. He was a graduate of Marshall High School and had been employed in area factories. He is survived by a son Michael; mother, Dolores Hayes of Marshall; sisters Dawn Marie and Danielle Audra; brother, Dennis J. Hayes. He was preceded in death by his father, Douglas W. Hayes in 1987 and a brother, Douglas A. Hayes in 1999. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service is being planned for this spring. Arrangements are by the Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home.
