David L. Wood13 Oct 1960 ~ 3 Mar 2008It is with great sadness that I report the death of Dave Wood - a very good friend of mine. I kept loosely in touch with Dave over the years, but it was always hard to keep up with him as he seemed to frequently change his email address and phone number. I hadn't spoke or corresponded with him in over a year by the time I heard about his passing. Ironically, I the last time I tried to call him was right about the time of his death; but as was often the case, I got voicemail. To add to the sadness of his death, Dave took his own life. Here's a photo I took of Dave in 1977 at my parents' house on Madison St. ~ just scanned it for the first time. from the March 8, 2008 edition of the Pantagraph (Bloomington, IL):NORMAL - David L. Wood, 47, Normal, died at 2:35 p.m. Monday (March 3, 2008) at his residence. Cremation rites will be accorded. There will be no services. East Lawn Funeral Home, Bloomington, is handling the arrangements. He was born in Marshall, Mich., on Oct. 13, 1960, the son of Lloyd and Carol Smith Wood. He married Debra Detweiler on May 15, 1999, in Rockford. They later divorced. David is survived by his cat "Angel"; two sisters, Cynthia Ann (David Leibert) Wood, Borrego Springs, Calif., and Teresa Lynn (Thomas) Howes, Normal; one daughter, Jessica, Henderson, Nev.; two nieces, Brittany and Bailey Howes, both of Normal; one nephew, Bryant Stewart, Post Falls, Idaho; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father; his mother, who recently died in January; a niece, Brianna Nicole Howes; and his maternal and paternal grandparents. David had served in the U.S. Navy from 1987 to 1989. He had worked at Meijer as a stocker and had formerly worked at Wal-Mart SuperCenter. David was very talented and gifted artistically. He enjoyed painting murals, caricatures and drawing. He loved the outdoors and bike riding. He loved his family deeply and he will be sadly missed.

Henry Ramirez12 Feb 1960 ~ 18 Jan 2010I recently got word that Henry Ramirez passed away (in mid-January 2010). He was living in California. Henry's cousin said the cause was cirrhosis of the liver. Henry, Jack Birch, Ron Falk and I were on the wrestling team together for all four years during high school. Even outside of wrestling, I spent a lot of time with Henry. I only saw him a few times since our high school days though.

Assistance with memorials is available at Kempf Funeral Home. 100 honor Coldwater police chief Brett Pehrson at funeral12 January 2012 MARSHALL -- Coldwater Public Safety Director Brett Pehrson did not answer his department's roll call Thursday. With 100 police officers and firefighters from several departments at attention, Coldwater Police Sgt. Patrick Beeman called roll for fire platoon and police shift commanders and then three times called Pehrson's name and his badge number. "After 27 years serving the communities of Olivet, Marshall and Coldwater, his watch ended Jan. 7," Beeman said as a bell tolled. "He is watching down from above and we have got it from here." The roll call ended services at the Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home in Marshall for Pehrson, 50, who died Saturday from cancer. Uniformed officers from the more than a dozen police and fire departments represented formed an honor guard outside the funeral home as eight pallbearers took Pehrson's coffin, covered with an American flag, to a waiting hearse, as his wife, Lori, four children and other family and friends stood near. A private burial service was Thursday afternoon at Oak Grove Cemetery in Coldwater. A native of Marshall, Pehrson worked as a patrol officer in Olivet for a year and then with the City of Marshall for 23 years before he was hired as public safety director in Coldwater on Jan. 28, 2008. "He was a good gift and we are thankful for him," Pastor Shayne Looper of Lockwood Community Church said during the funeral service. Looper spoke about the sadness people felt, especially because Pehrson died at a young age. "He was a man of faith and he believed in God and he prayed to him and trusted him," Looper said. "Was that trust misplaced? He had a dance still on the dance card but he never regretted. His body went weak but his faith did not." Looper said people who talked about Pehrson always asked why such a good man had to die early. "We might not understand but we can trust," Looper said. "It means trusting in (God's) love. And trust is not based on the circumstances but on the character of the ones we trust. If we only trust God when we understand him we will never trust him." His stepdaughter, Hillary Neusbaum, said she didn't want Pehrson to date her mother but then grew to love him. "He taught me the definition of a father," she said. "He was committed to loving and taking care of his family." Others spoke of Pehrson's love of police work. "He was first in the door and last to leave," said Frankenmuth Police Chief Don Mauer, who worked with Pehrson for 13 years in Marshall. "God put you on earth to teach us something." And Mark Bartell, Coldwater's Deputy Police Chief, praised Pehrson's integrity and leadership. "He told me work was not a job it was what he was," Bartell said. "You are a damn good cop and a decent man," Bartell said. "We are grateful for your service but equally grateful for your friendship." After the service, Emmett Township Public Safety Director Mike Olson said Pehrson was a natural leader and good fit in Coldwater. Olson was Marshall chief from 2003 to 2008 and encouraged Pehrson to apply for the Coldwater job. "He was a really genuine person and he really cared about his people, but made sure they did the right thing," Olson said. "He had a way with people and everyone was important to him."

Mary C. (Denning) Dobbertien5 Sep 1961 ~ 9 Apr 2016Mary C. Dobbertien, age 54, of Marshall, died at her home unexpectedly on April 9, 2016. Mary was born September 5, 1961 at Community Hospital to John C. and Gwendolyn M. (Jackson) Denning. Mary was taken home from the hospital to her parent's farm in Marshall Township. There she enjoyed the life that a child gets to experience when they grow up in the country on a farm. Mary had a horse that she rode bareback on the farm with her sisters. Their father John would become a bit nervous watching his daughters galloping through his fields! She attended Conley School, then Marshall Junior High School and Marshall High School where she was a member of the 1979 graduating class. She decided to become a dental hygienist and graduated from Kellogg Community College's Dental Hygienist program. Mary first worked in that position for a Battle Creek dentist, Dr. Bonfilio. She then worked at a Jackson dental practice before joining Dr. Weatherley's dental practice in Marshall in 1988. Mary retired from her work as a hygienist there in 2013. Mary met Garry Dobbertien at the home of mutual friends, Jim and Deb Codde, when they thought they "might be a good fit together!". Mary quietly mentioned to Deb that she was a bit concerned about how old Garry might be because of "his Gray hair!". Garry's hair color did not prove to be an obstacle to their blossoming romance, and Garry proposed marriage. They were married on November 26, 1988 in Marshall on the "first Saturday after Thanksgiving", a family favorite way to remember the anniversary over the past 27 years. The couple were blessed with daughters Megan and Christina. The Dobbertien family moved to live at Lyon Lake in the home Garry and Mary built to raise their family in. Mary loved being outdoors and gardening around the house. She loved all watersports and got to enjoy kayaking, boating, jet ski riding, skiing, tubing, paddle boating, and swimming right out their door. Mary enjoyed her daughters getting to grow up on the lake, where she taught them to love the same things she so enjoyed. Many, many hours were spent creating great family memories on and at the lake. Mary was a member of Family Bible Church where she helped staff the nursery and many other ministries. She and Garry enjoyed their Small Group Bible study together. She was a talented seamstress who made her daughter's Easter dresses, as well as many of their other clothes. Mary liked to cook and bake for the family gatherings at the lake. She was a dedicated walker, and a familiar sight walking around the lake. She loved her dog Ella who often accompanied her on her walks. Mary is survived by her beloved family including her husband Garry, daughter and son –in-law Megan and Matt Waun of Marshall, daughter Christina Dobbertien and her fiancé Lance Mason both of Marshall, her parents John and Gwen Denning of Marshall Township, her sisters and brothers-in-law Denise and Tom Herwaldt of Imlay City, Gail and Kevin Parker of Forest Grove, OR, and Diane and Barry Favorite of Bradenton, FL; 6 nieces and 4 nephews; her mother-in-law Katherine Dobbertien and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Larry and Deb Dobbertien all of Marshall. She was preceded in death by her father-in-law Fred Dobbertien. Friends may call at Craig K. Kempf Family Funeral Homes, Marshall Chapel, on Thursday from 2PM-8PM where the family will be present to greet friends and share memories from 2PM-4PM and 6PM-8PM. A Celebration of her life and her Lord will be held at the funeral home on Friday, April 15, at 11AM with Pastor Kris Tarkewicz and Rev. James Codde as celebrants. Interment will follow at Oakridge Cemetery. For her friends who wish to remember Mary with a memorial contribution, the family suggests memorials to Family Bible Church. Assistance with memorials is available at the funeral home. A meal and fellowship will follow committal services at the Kempf Family Funeral Home Marshall Chapel's Reception Hall.
